This hymn has application during Lent as an Offertory reflection on the Gospel of the day and for Sending Forth. It also works well for Lenten Gospel Reflection Groups.
The text of the hymn particularly draws on the scriptural references contained in the Gospels of the Five Sundays of Lent Year C and Palm Sunday.
The Refrain recalls the interplay of our Faith and God's merciful Love in living Christian life.
Lord, I believe in your merciful love.
Lord, I believe!By way of example, Verse 3 draws on the images from the Gospel of 3rd Sunday of Lent Year C, about the fig tree that hadn't yet produced fruit, and 3rd Sunday of Lent Year A, about the Samaritan Woman at the well:
Patient gardener,
welling up in me
a fruitful nature,
in your merciful love.
Living water
welling up in me
life forever,
in your merciful love.Similarly, Verse 4 draws on the images from the Gospel of 4th Sunday of Lent Year C, about the prodigal son, and the 4th Sunday of Lent Year A, about the man born blind, his relationship to his father, and Jesus determination to "carry out the work of the one who sent me," his loving Father:
Faithful Father,
drawing close to me,
reconcile me,
in your merciful love.
Loving Father,
drawing close to me,
walk beside me
in your merciful love."God of Mercy (I Believe)" was recorded as part of the Wollongong Diocese Lenten Program in 2013, in the Year of Faith. It was also inluded in the Extraordinary Year of Mercy 2015 Jubilee 24 Hours For The Lord CD that was included in the 2016 Diocesan Lenten Program.
It features in Liturgical Song's suggested liturgy outlines for Lent during the 2025 Jubilee Year Pilgrims of Hope.
